Hussien Farah Odowa is the Founder and Executive Director of Community in Action Against Poverty (CAAP), a leading local NGO in Ethiopia’s Somali Region. From humble beginnings with three volunteers in a small room, he has grown CAAP into a trusted national partner delivering both life-saving humanitarian response and long-term, community-driven development solutions. Under his leadership, CAAP’s annual portfolio expanded to over $3 million in 2025, with 125 full-time staff and 500+ temporary workers each month, reaching more than 1 million vulnerable people to date through impactful programming.
With over 18 years of experience in senior roles across NGOs, UN agencies, and government institutions in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Yemen, and Ukraine, Hussien brings deep expertise in humanitarian operations, resilience programming, and sustainable development. He has managed multi sector multimillion programs, funded and partnered with leading donors including USAID/BHA, FCDO, EU/ECHO, CERF, UN agencies, IOM, the World Bank, and OCHA’s Humanitarian Fund.
Hussien has spearheaded large-scale emergency and development programs, with a strong focus on integrating WASH interventions—embedding sanitation and hygiene promotion into health, nutrition, education, shelter, and protection sectors. A strong advocate for systemic change in humanitarian aid, he champions the role of local actors, resilience-building, and integrated WASH as essential to safeguarding dignity and saving lives in crises.
Hussien attended the globally recognized institutions, including the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Oxford Brookes University (UK), the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (India), as well as JigJiga University and Alpha University (Ethiopia).
