Director, SOLO Somalia

Hussein Kulmiye is the Executive Director of Somali Lifeline Organization (SOLO). He is an active member of the Somalia Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), chairs the Partnership and Localization Technical Working Group, and serves as the co-chair of the FOCUS Network — a consortium of locally led national NGOs in Somalia.

With over 18 years of experience in the humanitarian and development sector across East and the Horn of Africa, Hussein has worked with both international and local organizations implementing programs grounded in peacebuilding and conflict-sensitive approaches. He holds a Master’s degree in Humanitarian Assistance and International Cooperation, complemented by extensive leadership in program design and implementation. Hussein has led multi-million dollar programs spanning humanitarian response and resilience, youth and women empowerment, peacebuilding, food security and livelihoods, health, nutrition, cash transfers, and WASH in Kenya, Somalia, Yemen, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.

As Executive Director at SOLO, Hussein oversees program design, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation, human resources, and overall operations. He is deeply familiar with national, regional, and global aid reform processes, including the World Humanitarian Summit (2016) and the Grand Bargain commitments. He actively engages with emerging global themes such as Humanitarian Reset, Anticipatory Action, and the Rethinking and reimagining of the Humanitarian and Development architecture — particularly in fragile state contexts. Hussein’s work reflects a strong commitment to humanitarian principles, the localization agenda, the triple nexus, and innovative partnership models. He has contributed to numerous humanitarian evaluations and holds a comprehensive understanding of international humanitarian systems.
