WOTA CORP. Company Profile

Empowering Water Freedom, Everywhere

WOTA is an award-winning Japanese startup transforming the way the world accesses clean water. Founded in 2014 in Tokyo, WOTA addresses the global water crisis with pioneering technology that makes water use possible even in the most challenging environments—without reliance on traditional, centralized infrastructure.

Our Mission

Our mission is "Water Freedom for Everyone, Everywhere." With 1 in 4 people in the world lacking secure access to safely managed drinking water and 1 in 2 people for safely managed sanitation system, WOTA delivers structural solutions using advanced, small-scale, decentralized water recycling systems. We believe everyone deserves resilient and sustainable water access, regardless of geography or circumstance.

Innovative Product Line

  • WOTA Unit:
Our latest product published in July 2025, WOTA Unit recycles essentially any domestic wastewater—toilet, kitchen, shower, laundry, etc.—independent of conventional, centralized water and sanitation network. The current model has been already tested in multiple sites in Japan and abroad since 2023 and will be on sale soon. Further, there is a portable version of WOTA Unit that is ready to be tested, which we actively look for piloting partners.

  • WOTA BOX:
A portable, autonomous water reuse plant, the WOTA BOX recycles over 98% of wastewater from showers into safe, usable water. Weighing just 80kg with a compact 0.25m³ footprint, WOTA BOX is deployable in disaster zones, remote communities, and water-scarce regions. It meets WHO standards for drinking water quality, requiring only a power source to operate.

  • WOSH:
A mobile water circulation hand-washing station, WOSH can be installed anywhere, providing hygienic handwashing and surface sterilization—vital for public health, especially during emergencies or in underserved areas.

Impact and Recognition

WOTA’s technology has already supported tens of thousands across Japan during floods, earthquakes, and typhoons, ensuring uninterrupted access to clean water in times of crisis. Our WOTA BOX and WOSH units have supplied evacuation centers, hospitals, and care facilities after the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, demonstrating real-world resilience and humanitarian impact.

The company has received accolades including the Sustainable Japan Excellence Award and was a finalist for the 2021 Earthshot Prize for innovations in water.

For International Development

WOTA is dedicated to international partnership, working with communities, governments, and development agencies to realize sustainable water solutions in both urban and off-grid settings. Our decentralized model reduces infrastructure costs, adapts to population changes, and mitigates the risks of water scarcity and infrastructure failure, empowering lasting solutions for global water security.

Potential applications include, but not limited to

  • Refugee camps, where permanent infrastructure is hard to installed and groundwater contaminations often become an issue
  • Informal settlements, where physical and regulatory contexts often make it difficult to install water and sanitation networks
