Protecting Critical Infrastructure in Times of Crisis – A Field Success Story in Emergency Response

21 Oct 2026
Workshop Room 1

This presentation will share a real-life humanitarian success story where severe flooding placed a critical water facility serving local communities at immediate risk.

The incident occurred during an ongoing rehabilitation intervention, when rapidly rising floodwaters introduced an unexpected emergency that threatened both the facility and the continuity of its operations. The situation required an immediate and coordinated response alongside the ongoing works to protect the infrastructure and maintain essential services.

The presentation will showcase how rapid emergency response, engineering intervention, field coordination, and continuous on-site operations helped protect the facility and maintain the continuity of an essential public service despite challenging and rapidly changing conditions.

Rather than focusing primarily on technical details, the session will present the experience as a practical example of humanitarian infrastructure resilience, coordination, and emergency response, highlighting how teams working within an active rehabilitation environment adapted to an unforeseen crisis while continuing to safeguard critical infrastructure and services.

The experience will also highlight the human dimension behind the response—the field teams working continuously under difficult conditions and the wider community impact of keeping an essential water service operational during the emergency.
