Beyond Delivering “More with Less” - Scaling Anticipatory Disaster Insurance
Tearfund and Global Parametrics are scaling a portfolio-based insurance model that pools climate risk across countries in Africa and Asia. Global Parametrics’ Water Balance Index and satellite data trigger financing without waiting for post-disaster damage assessments, while local partners determine how payouts support communities. Since 2024, triggered payouts have supported local provision of food, water, seeds, irrigation repairs and livestock vaccinations. The next phase aims to expand from four to six countries, add excess rainfall alongside drought, and triple coverage to 150,000 people through a combination of capacity-building “build” capital and premium “fuel.”
