Case study on Women's Climate Shock Insurance and Livelihoods Initiative (WCSI)
Extreme heat is a growing humanitarian challenge in India, severely affecting informal women workers. To help protect them, the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) partnered with Swiss Re, ICICI Lombard, and Climate Resilience for All to create a first-of-its-kind insurance program. The cover is designed so that when temperatures in a district rise beyond a certain level, payments are automatically made directly to the members. In 2024, extreme heatwaves led to USD 365,000 being paid directly to nearly 46,000 women, showing how parametric insurance can offer timely protection and reduce income volatility during crises.
