Strengthening protective environment in times of crisis: How legal and paralegal programming disrupt violence, protect civilians and prevent conflicts
Crises created by conflicts and disasters influence the prevalence and nature of violence faced by communities and individuals. In those contexts, breakdown of social order, resource scarcity, forced displacement, are all factors that create an environment where violence can thrive often amounting to violation of civilian’s rights. Those changes in the social ecosystem create critical barriers to societies and individuals’ ability to survive, recover and develop.
IRC legal programing has been built on the evidence that prevention of escalation of violence and disruption of nature of violence contribute to the protection and inclusion of traditionally marginalized social groups and strengthens social cohesion, thereby creating an enabling environment for individuals and communities’ inclusive recovery and development.
IRC will share its practice and learnings on legal and paralegal programing designed and implemented in diverse contexts. We will highlight how legal and paralegal programming strengthens local capacity to solve disputes in nonviolent ways, protect individuals and drive inclusion in accessing rights across the spectrum of crisis in IDPs and Refugees contexts.
